Great Choice of Careers in Education

The education sector employs a great number of people in a wide range of roles. Think education and the immediate association is with the teacher, but there are far more careers that fall under the education banner.

Of course, you may want to become a teacher – and we will be talking about the steps you need to take if that is your chosen career – and it is a rewarding and important job. We will also be looking at other possible careers in the education sector.

Let’s begin by talking about the options you have for careers in education, and the various levels of qualification you need to aim for.

Teaching Careers are in the Education Field

We should begin by talking about teaching, as that is a role that many people aspire to. A good starting point is to take an associate's degree. This is a two-year study path, and as it can be followed at the junior or community college level, is a more cost-effective method of getting into further education.

An associate's degree will qualify you for positions such as preschool teacher or a teaching assistant. You will learn about classroom planning and basic teaching skills. The degree can be studied on campus or – as is becoming increasingly popular – online. The latter is convenient for those with families, for example.

If you want to teach at a secondary or elementary level, you will certainly require a bachelor’s degree. For those with an associate's degree, a further two years at university or following an online study path will raise it to bachelor’s level. Otherwise, a full four-year study program will be the best option. Note that to become a teacher you require a license from your state, which is only given to those with the right degree.

You will also be expected to show a number of hours of hands-on experience in a classroom, either as an intern or a teaching assistant. This can be earned during your study program.

Higher Level Education Careers

For those who aim to teach at a college level, or who want to work in school administration, a master’s degree will usually be required. Moving further up the ladder, if you are intent on working in research in education, or in areas such as curriculum development, you will need to hold a Doctorate or Ph.D. This can also open the door to jobs in the government, for example, which can be highly lucrative.

School finance, planning, administration, and organization are all areas offering jobs in education. Schools and colleges also require student counselors, so that may be a career that you wish to consider. The education system is vast and wide and makes a sensible choice for many high school graduates.

Whatever your aims we hope this brief article has helped you understand more about the various opportunities in the education field. The roles mentioned are by no means comprehensive, and when you begin researching the possible career opportunities you will certainly find something of interest.
